” Competition
Michigan State University has engaged renowned architect and architecture and design critic Joseph Giovannini to facilitate a competition to select the architectural firm to design the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. Initially, 10 semifinalist firms were identified from an initial field of approximately 30 firms. This week a screening committee selected five finalist firms to submit competition proposals. The winning proposal will be selected by a jury by the end of July.
Design Goal
The charge to the architectural firms is to present a building design concept that will stand out from the traditional brick Gothic campus and serve as a symbol of the university’s trajectory into the future. At the same time, the development of the museum site will honor the connection of old to new, incorporating mature specimen trees into a sculpture garden that will anchor the new building in its surroundings.
